Fujitsu Collects Sony Batteries
The Japanese Fujitsu said it will collect 287,000 laptop batteries that were made by Sony. This way the total number of Sonny batteries that were exchanged is around 7.5 million. Fujitsu, the electronics manufacturer, is not the first one to recall Sony`s batteries. Apple Computer, Dell, IBM, Lenovo and Toshiba are among those who have recalled the notebook PC batteries, that sometimes can, according to Sony, short-circuit, overheat and cause a fire.
In August, after Apple and Dell had recalled around 6 million batteries, Sony estimated the damage between 20 billion and 30 billion yen, or $170 million to $254 million. Sony also will recall batteries by itself. A Sony spokesman said that total recall costs for Sony will probably go beyond the estimate. An announcement will be made by the when its latest estimate and influence on the profits will become clearer.
Sony also said that it will delay the release of the latest version of its Playstation in Europe. The new Playstation will be launched only in March and not in November as it was planned before. The maker of Bravia flat TVs, Cyber-shot digital cameras and Vaio personal computers said it would soon start releasing Blu-ray high-definition optical-disc recorders in Japan. Sony is about one month behind the launch of similar products by its competitor Matsushita Electric Industrial.
