Freedom Movement in Thailand Call for Censorship Removal
Recent political changes in Thailand ignite further calls for reform. A new group calling for a freer internet has filed a petition with the Thai Human Rights Commission asking that online censorship will cease. 30 individuals signed the petition and with the backing of 70 international organizations, the initiators of the petition are hoping that their call will be answered soon.
"I think this is a major issue for the future of Thailand. If people don`t have all the information, they are not fully informed and without a fully informed public, you can`t expect people to make the right decisions, "said the originator of the petition. Currently, there are more than 35,000 sites under censorship in Thailand, and the new body, Freedom Against Censorship Thailand, is calling for the immediate removal of government intervention.
Internet users in Thailand that try to surf one of the censored sites will see a green screen telling them that the site has been blocked. In a free world, the freedom of information is one of the most important values, and the Freedom Against Censorship Thailand movement is hoping that the country will leap forward as a result of the information freedom that they are asking. Most blocked sites are related to the opposition in Thailand and the government does not allow its objectors to be heard through the internet. The petition has just been filed, and it will take some time until real action is taken.
