Oracle and Linux Join Forces

Oracle and Linux have joined forces. Oracle, the world?s third-largest software company, has recently announced that it will supply support services for the Linux operating system which is currently distributed by Red Hat. Oracle has undercut its smaller competitor on price. The company is planning to cut prices in half for early adopters that subscribe before the end of January, 2007. The price will start at US 49 dollars a year for basic access to upgrades and patches. This is good news for webmasters everywhere.

?Linux is a strategic platform for Oracle. The Free Standards Group`s Linux Standard Base is an ideal forum to collaborate with the greater Linux ecosystem on important issues for our customers,? said Donald Deutsch, Oracles standards strategy VP. Part of Oracle?s strategy to take on Red Hat is a pre-emptive strike at the Linux vendor?s community heartland. Oracle has joined the Free Standards Group (FSG) as a Platinum member. Webmasters will surely be working with Oracle now.

The decision to join Linux in this business venture may allow Oracle to win more customers and webmasters who favor less expensive server hardware running open-source software, such as operating systems. Red Hat and other vendors typically offer the software at little cost and charge annual support fees. Support will be available to all Red Hat customers, and Oracle?s support prices for Red Hat Linux will be less than half of Red Hat?s fees.
