Democracy Activist Keeps Blog Alive From Prison
Many online users dismiss the need to write a blog by saying that they simple do not have the time for it. Well, for Alaa Abdel-Fattah who is a prisoner in Egypt time is all he has. The 24-year-old prisoner has become the most popular pro-democracy voices in Egypt through his blog. That`s right, the Egyptian prisoner is running an online blog right from his cell. Adel-Fattah scribbles messages on slips of paper that make their way to cyberspace and spread across the Internet.
Adbel-Fattah has a very popular blog in Egypt, and when he was incarcerated in early May, it was clear to him that he was not going to give up his writing. Adbel-Fattah was arrested during a street demonstration in Cairo. "We covered the walls of our cell with graffiti of our names and slogans and Web site addresses," Abdel-Fattah wrote one time, referring to himself and fellow imprisoned activists. "We chanted and sang and the mood was great."
"I`m sitting here terrified they`ll move me to a worse cell or cut off my visits. What should I tell you ? that the day will come for them (the regime)? I`m afraid our grandchildren won`t see that day, much less us." Abdel-Fattah`s descriptions are colorful and vivid. His notes are shorts due to circumstances. Abdel-Fattah`s blog promotes a democracy movement demanding reform from the President Hosni Mubarak.
