Online Adult Industry Will Not Get Their Domain Name Just Yet
The online entertainment industry suffers a blow when the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers maintained its previous decision from last June and did not approve the use of a .xxx domain name. ICANN postponed making a final decision regarding the matter after the U.S. government interfered a few days before the day of the deciding meeting.
ICANN critics now question the organization`s independence. The Internet is the symbol of free speech and of freedom of choice and the intervention by the United States` government should not be accepted. "The board was certainly very conscious of that (the controversy) ... but the heart of the decision today was not driven by a political consideration," ICANN Chief Executive Paul Twomey said in an interview.
Twomey stressed that the decision not to approve the creation for a .xxx domain name was made because such a decision might put the organization in a difficult position of having to enforce all of the world`s laws governing pornography. The .xxx notion was first addressed back in 2000, and it has now been 6 years that the online adult industry is struggling to create a domain name of their own.
