Microsoft to Release its First Antivirus Software
Software giant Microsoft opens a new front and enters the world of desktop security applications. Windows Live OneCare antivirus software is Microsoft`s first step in the security market. Windows Live OneCare will be available shortly and will cost $49.95 per year. Yearly license will cover all updates and will be legal for up to three Windows XP computers. This approach means that "98 percent of homes in the U.S. will be able to buy one subscription and be able to cover all of their PCs," Microsoft Group Program Manager Brian Hall said in an interview.
Windows Live OneCare will integrate other features rather than just operating as antivirus software. OneCare includes backup and PC-tuning software and will be presented as a complete security package for the home user. The product is currently available for download as a beta version. Microsoft schedules Thursday for the final release, and market leader Symantec is not happy at all.
Symantec sued Microsoft for misconduct regarding intellectual property, and is obviously anxious about the software giant`s entrance into a market where Symantec is clearly dominating. Symantec executives said that they would fight competition from Microsoft by offering better security technology. "Microsoft is very much focusing on the old-world problems of viruses and worms, and we`re focusing on what we would call the new-world problems," said Chief Financial Officer at Symantec.
