Intel Issues New Xeon Chips This Week
The world`s largest CPU maker, Intel, announced on Monday that their new line of processor for servers will ship this week. Intel is targeting to fend off an offensive from rival AMD. Intel`s new series of processors are a dual core CPUs that belong to the Intel`s Xeon brand. The new chips are codenamed Woodcrest and they are the first of a range of products that the CPU giant plans to issue in upcoming months.
The new Xeons use a more efficient design that would enable better performance and lower power consumption. Intel`s rival, AMD, is working on the same line and markets its product as then better performance vs. power consumption choice. We see that the tables have turned in the CPU world and that Intel is now mimicking AMD`s strategic approach.
AMD has managed to widen its hold over the servers market, and Intel is working hard to retake that market share. AMD`s technological edge for recent years will be hard to beat, but luckily, for Intel its brand name is powerful enough to hold. Kirk Skaugen, vice president of the digital enterprise group and general manager of Intel`s server platforms group, acknowledged AMD has gotten "a lot of buzz" in the industry but said Intel was confident of keeping its leadership position with the new chips.
