Photos in 3D Format Soon By Microsoft

Here is great news for those Microsoft users who like to share photos online. Microsoft is developing a new 3D software technology in order to create a 3D online photo sharing option for its customers. The technology will be available later this year.

"Photosynth," the new technology, will allow users to combine their photos with thousands of others collected on the Internet to present a detailed 3D model of a subject, giving viewers the feeling of gliding around a scene from every angle. The picture can be zoomed in to see greater detail or zoomed out for a wider view.

The 3D technology was initiated as a cooperative research project called "Photo Tourism" between the University of Washington and Microsoft Research. This research combined both new and traditional techniques in computer vision, image-based modeling and representation, image browsing, retrieval and annotation and keypoint detection and matching. Together they will present unstructured collections of photos in 3D perspective.
