Intel`s New Itanium 2 Montecito Chips

This week Intel officially introduced its "Montecito" family of dual-core Itanium 2 server chips. The chips` power and performance advantages, said Mercury Research President Dean McCarron, are very likely to attract high-end clients. According to Intel, the new chips, which will be released next month, will be built into major server systems. With the help of the Itanium 2 "Montecito" chips there will be more freedom for running multiple and different operating systems at the same time through server virtualization.

Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Digital Enterprise Group Pat Gelsinger said: "Intel remains focused on removing the proprietary shackles that remain in the high end of the server market segment, and with new dual-core Itanium 2 processors, we are delivering unprecedented IT freedom with a product that excels in performance, reliability and improved energy efficiency".

Intel`s customers will receive an enormous improvement in their work, with the new Itanium 2 chips. The main improvements are the performance and power gains that come with a dual-core processor. The Itanium 2 platform, according to Intel, offers wide application support and can support different operating systems, including Windows, Linux and Unix.
