Apple sells education iMac for $899

Apple Computer Inc. will start to sell its iMac PC for $899, in order to reinforce its business at the education market. The new computer, according to the company, will have a 17-inch liquid crystal display and will be powered by the Core Duo, Intel Corp.`s latest-generation chip. The iMac will replace Apple`s eMac, which had a much larger display and used older technology. It comes with multimedia applications for creating Web sites with Web logs and photos and has the latest Macintosh operating system.

Since the 1980s Apple has been offering discounts to students and teachers in order to compete with companies such as International Business Machines (IBM) Corp., Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. and others, in the profitable educational PC market.

According to Apple`s 2005 annual report, more than 10% of its net sales were to the US education market, including elementary and secondary schools, higher education and individuals buyers.
