France to Open iTunes

The story of Apple`s iTunes and the battle for compatibility is a long one. Apple Computer dominates the world of mobile and online music consumption with their iPod line of products. There iTunes music store is the most popular online music services. There are many other companies that offer users mobile media devices and by not offering iTunes compatibility with other formats Apple are using their monopole powers over the market.

French lawmakers decided that this must end and gave final approval on Friday to government-backed legislation that could force Apple to change their ways. Apple did not respond to Friday`s development has of yet. Apple as long contemplated that their policy`s objective is to prevent online piracy, but French courts believe otherwise.

It seems that other governments might follow France`s example and that Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Poland will also strive for legislation that will open iTunes for the rest of the market. "Whenever there`s a choice, for consumers it`s always a good thing," said Michael Gikas, a spokesman for the U.S.-based Consumers Union. "It`s a shame that people can`t separately choose the best player and the best site," he said.
