FBI Cracks Down on Internet Piracy Group in NY

A serious blow to online piracy was inflicted by the FBI. More than 13 members of an international movie-piracy ring were arrested in FBI raids on Wednesday. The ring was responsible for half of all camcorder copies of films that are available on the black market as well as on the internet in the United States.

The group was located in the New York-area and estimates indicate that it is responsible for 25 percent of all camcorder copies of blockbuster movies worldwide. The operation was a successful conclusion for a three-year old investigation by the FBI and U.S Attorney`s Office in New York.

The MPAA was more than pleased by the operation and hopes that the war against online piracy continues. MPAA`s CEO, Dan Glickman, referred to the operation as a substantial victory. "We applaud the FBI and U.S. Attorney`s office for their energy and diligence in this case," Glickman said. "These camcorders were an organized group of people responsible for fueling an underground economy."
