One Million Dollars For an Idea
Some people have million dollar ideas and some people actually see these ideas come to life. The million dollar webpage is one of those ideas that has helped make one man very rich. His idea was to sell the pixels on the site for advertising, and with one million pixels available, the million dollar homepage really made a millionaire out of its creator. Sitelutions, a subsidiary of Info Relay Online Systems, Inc., and leading provider of low-cost Domain Name Registration, Web Hosting, and free URL Redirection, DNS and Dynamic DNS services, was selected in September of 2005 to host The Million Dollar Homepage, a website developed by 21-year-old Alex Tew. Mr. Tew?s main goal behind creating this website was to raise the money necessary to pay for his college education by selling advertising space in blocks of 100 pixels.
By December 31, 2005, Tew had sold 999,000 of his one million available pixels at one dollar each. On January 1, 2006, Tew announced a 10 day e-bay auction to sell the remaining 1,000 pixel block. Info Relay stated that they are honored that Alex selected them to host his site. With so much worldwide coverage, Alex needed a host that could support the site?s intense bandwidth requirements. Sitelutions has hosted The Million Dollar Homepage since September, 23, 2005. At that time, Mr. Tew?s site had grossed approximately $108,000.
Since Sitelutions has hosted the site, Mr. Tew?s site has received up to 16 million hits per day, 500,000 unique visitors per day, and has utilized up to 200 megabits per second of Internet bandwidth. The self-made millionaire touted Sitelutions in his blog entry on January 1, 2006: ?Finally I would like to say a huge thank you to Sitelutions who are probably the best web hosting company ever. They have given me an unbelievable level of support and ensured that the site has stayed online despite the millions of visitors. I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for serious, reliable, cost-effective web hosting, whether you`re a small start-up or a huge multinational corporation.?
