ISP Company and Online Pirates Duel Over Site Access
In an effort to stop online piracy, internet service provider Perspektiy blocked access to the Swedish file-sharing site, The Pirate Bay. The company hoped to reduce the number of people that are sharing files, and to stop online piracy by cutting the communication line between the customers. In an online retaliation act, the Swedish file-sharing site and its supporters have blocked access to all of Perspektiy`s customers to the legal site allofmp3.
Bureau of Piracy, who are behind the retaliation act, are hoping that the frustrated customers of the internet service provider will pressure Perspektiy to lift the ban over the Swedish file-sharing site, so they could access allofmp3. ISPs have been using IP-blocks to fight online piracy, and it seems that hackers have learned the trick and are applying the same strategies against the online service providers. Both the Swedish file-sharing site and allofmp3, are calling other sites to join in the struggle and block Perspektiy`s customers from accessing sites.
When hearing about online IP blocks, you always pictures big companies that are manipulating online access, but when thinking about it, any site owner can block certain people from accessing its content. Sites that are working together can also influence the way people are accessing the internet, and as we see, can create pressure that will affect ISPs. If people using a specific ISP will not be able to access the internet, they will surely change their service provider. This changes the picture and puts online pirates on the same level of influence as ISP companies.
