Study Shows Mobile Segment Not That Mobile

The drastic rise in laptop sales, and the subsequent drop in desktop sales, might cause you to think that the world of computer is on the move. Well, if by `move` you are talking about mobile, then you are right, more people are using mobile computers. However, if by `move` you are referring to non-stationary, then you are very mistaken. A new study shows that although more people are buying mobile laptops, they are not really using hitting the road with their new mobile devices.

MetaFacts, a company that conducts market research, showed that most company-owned laptops are usually left in the workplace and are not used in a portable fashion. When businessmen do travel and take their mobile computers with them, they normally station them in hotels, home offices or client locations, and there is no `real` portable use going on. The computers are portable, but that`s about it regarding mobility. Although, when taking a look at the consumer-segment of the mobile market, the picture changes.

Home users are much more portable with their mobile computers. They move their laptops from room to room, take it outside during outdoors activities, and even take their home laptop to work with them. The study included some 7,300 American computer users, and is though to be though enough to paint a picture about the entire American computer world. MetaFacts analysts say that people are buying mobile computers for the very promise of being able to do whatever they want everywhere, and not because they turn that promise into a reality.
