AMD Unveils Quad Core Platforms

AMD has taken the CPU wars between the company and Intel into a new level by showcasing its new Quad-Core CPU technology. The new chip is titled "Barcelona" and tech fans and analysts were looking forward for this introduction for a long time. AMD`s new chip will go on mass production in the second quarter of 2007, and will carry the Opteron product name. Intel and AMD are battling for many years over the CPU market, and while Intel has higher sell figures, many believe that AMD offer superior technology.

The new chip from AMD has four cores and targets the high-end market, namely companies that use commercial servers and workstations. The new Opteron can deliver up to 70 percent more than its predecessor in database applications, and up to 40 percent more power when dealing with floating point-oriented tasks. Intel is also offering a quad-core platform for its costumers, and AMD wanted to make it clear that they are ready for the challenge.

Along with the new Opetron, AMD showcased it`s "4x4"Quad FX platform that will target gamers and serious home users. The platform is build from two dual-core Athlon FX CPUs combined on a single motherboard, and delivers raw power for home users looking to power the latest games or resource-demanding applications. Although Intel was the first to introduce quad-core chips, AMD`s new "Barcelona" was presented as an engineering achievement that makers the company`s shift to a 65-nm production line. AMD is known for its emphasis on the technological aspect of its product, and for being concerned with more than sheer power.
