BiTorrent to Launch iTunes-Like Video Service

The movie and broadcasting industry seems to follow the footsteps of the music industry, as BiTorrent Inc, developer of arguably the most popular file-sharing protocol, announced that several different deals were signed between the company and elements in the industry. The idea is to offer users something like Apple`s iTunes service where downloads are available for very little money, and Apple pays the music industry per license. BiTorrent is aiming for the same business model.

Agreements were signed with Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, and many other famous studies. The company also signed licensing deals with cable television networks G4 and Starz Media along with many other brands. Although the names of the companies involved were mentioned, there were no additional details available, especially those concerning the financial terms. BiTorrent plans to launch the new download service in February and hopes to offer thousands of movies and TV shows by that point.

Uses will have to pay as little as $1 for single episodes, and a bit more for full features. The main idea will be offering quality video content legally for people who like to consume their entertainment online. Some movies will be only available for a limited number of views, and other will be freely distributed. With the demand for portable video players is rising, and more people use their computer to watch videos and TV shows, the service could become a major hit. It seems like the movie industry is finally realizing the potential of the internet in distribution, and a model, that works for both users and studies, is slowly forming.
