Korea Investigates Microsoft
Korea`s antitrust organization has begun an investigation into Microsoft Corp. which may lead to delays in new versions of Windows operating systems being introduced into the country, as well as Windows completely leaving the country. The Korean Fair Trade Commission is carefully watching Microsoft`s competitive practices, with investigations into the company`s streaming media and instant messenger technology.
Ironically, RealNetworks is among the companies filing complaints against Microsoft in Korea. In its quarterly report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Microsoft says the Korean commission could require the company to remove code or redesign Windows specifically for the Korean market. If that happened, the company might withdraw Windows from the Korean market or delay offering new versions.
The technology giant has faced legal and regulatory antitrust actions worldwide due to its business and technological advancement practices in its operating system. Earlier this month, Microsoft settled an antitrust lawsuit with RealNetworks Inc., by paying up to $761 million in cash and services. The Korean Fair Trade Commission states any decisions in the RealNetworks settlement wouldn`t have any effect on its investigation into Microsoft.
