Yahoo Purchases Upcoming Website

Yahoo Inc. has recently acquired Upcoming, an online event-planning site. Yahoo hopes to gain more content and information regarding news and events taking place in local communities. This will enrichen Yahoo`s site and the content will enable this Internet giant to provide a service it has never been able to before.

Los Angeles-based Upcoming allows users to post free listings about a wide range of events. Founder Andy Baio says the site offers tools that enable users to share observations about the events and discover common areas of interest.

Paul Levine, Yahoo`s general manager of local search, says Yahoo has plans to incorporate much of the content into its own site to bolster its local search capabilities. Levine continues, `We think local search is about much more than being able to find a business in your community. There is no question that local events are an important component, too.`
