Serb Player Jankovic Wins Italian Tennis Title
The Serbian tennis player, Jelena Jankovic, surprised even herself last Sunday after she clinched the winner?s title of the Italian Open tennis championships. Jankovic beat the Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, ranked number three in the world, in an impressive match consisting of two sets. The final score was 7-5, 6-1. This latest win means that Jankovic, who was seeded third in the competition, will move up to fourth place in the world tennis rankings.
Jelena Jankovic has made a surprise turnaround after a series of bad games and competitions in recent years. Her change of luck began during last year?s Rome Tournament, which she entered after ten successive defeats in previous matches. The slow but steady climb to success this year began after she reached the quarter finals of that competition and went on to do great things in this year?s tennis scene. Jankovic admitted that at one point last year, before the competition, she considered quitting tennis. ?But it was here that everything turned around. And now one year later I`m here holding the trophy and I`m number four in the world. It`s amazing," Jankovic said.
This year?s final Italian Open women?s match was almost an anti-climax after spectators expected to watch a long-running and hard-paced game. Instead, Jankovic held her own in the first set which lasted 47 minutes and then went on to break Kuznetsova?s game and walked away with an easy 6-1 win in the second and final set. Despite the victory, Jankovic declared that she was sure that she could play even better than she had in the finals.
