Florida Gators Take Second Title

The Florida Gators of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida have done the unthinkable and for the first time in American sport history a college athletic organization has won the national title for both basketball and football, in the same year. On Tuesday the Gators beat the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were favoured to win, 14:41, in a surprising and exciting game, at the University of Phoenix Stadium, Monday night.

The title is for the 2006 season, one of the best seasons in college football, in recent years. Troy Smith, who received the Heisman Memorial Trophy Award, awarded annually to the most outstanding collegiate football player in the U.S. and is considered by many to be the most prestigious prize in American college football, was supposed to lead the Ohio State Buckeyes to an easy victory, but the Gators coach, Urban Meyer`s brilliant game plan changed that. The Buckeyes did open 0:7, but from then on it was Florida, who controlled the game, under the leadership of Chris Leak and Tim and Tim Tebow, the team`s two quarterbacks.

It defiantly seems that Florida has a dominant control over the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The University of Florida in Gainesville has long been considered a leader in sports research and management. Among Florida`s contributions to the world of sports is Gatorade, which was created by researchers at the University of Florida and named for the school`s mascot. The drink was developed to rehydrate and to replenish the carbohydrates. Prior last year`s season the Gators only held one title ? A college football championship from 1996.
