Cracked bone sidelines Alexander

Although they won Sunday`s game against the New York Giants 42-30, the Seattle Seahawks would prefer things turned out different. Last year`s NFL rushing leader, running back Shaun Alexander broke his left foot, and will be sidelined for at least a couple of weeks. Coach Mike Holmgren said Monday that a bone scan revealed Alexander sustained a "small crack" and "displaced fracture" on a non-weight-bearing foot bone sometime during the game.

It began on opening day at Detroit when the reigning MVP bruised his bone, which led to the small crack. Alexander missed practices last Wednesday and Thursday, and his 187 total yards for the season, 2.9 yards per carry average and only two touchdowns have been mediocre in his standards. Sunday he played wearing new shoes with special inserts.

"You lose the MVP for a while, it`s a hit," Holmgren said. Coach must have had next Sunday night`s game at Chicago, against the 3-0 Bears in mind. Maurice Morris will make his fifth career start for Alexander. Morris rushed 15 times for 18 yards against the Giants on Sunday. Seattle then has its bye the following week before playing at division rival St. Louis on Oct. 15.
