Clemens plays last home game
Wednesday seemed like just another work day for Roger Clemens. Like the 347 times before, he showed up at a baseball park and pitched for a win. But Wednesday was not just another day. Clemens delivered the win, alright, earning his Astros team no. 73 and himself no. 348. It was also probably the Rocket`s last home start.
The hard-throwing right-hander future Hall of Famer threw six scoreless innings as the Astros beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-2 before an appreciative crowd of 31,928. "If that`s it," Clemens said, "then it was a lot of fun." Clemens is scheduled for two more starts on the road, but pitching at Minute Maid Park again would require a miraculous comeback this season, or signing for another year ? his 24th major league season.
Clemens, 44, allowed only 3 hits in 6 shutout innings. In comments after the game, he stopped short of saying his third season with the Astros would be the last of his legendary career. He also didn`t say he would return. "You`re just watching an absolute legend who`s not (just) hanging on," manager Phil Garner said. "He`s contributing and doing it in a great way."
