Buckeyes end Texas streak
In their matchup Saturday, defending champions Texas and visiting team Ohio State both knew what was at stake. The importance of the game for the remainder of the season was not questioned before the game, and the outcome now places the Buckeyes in great position for a run to the national title. The winning team held on to their number one rank, while the losers are left searching for answers to where their season will go.
Although Texas was the home team, favored to win by 2.5 points and coming off a 21-game winning streak, Ohio State won the game 24-7 Saturday night. The loss of Longhorns` starting quarterback Vince Young was too great for the team. His replacement, Colt McCoy, threw for 154 yards with an interception and a touchdown against the OSU defense.
The game was a rare occasion for two top seeded teams to meet in the regular season, as it last happened in 1996 when then second seed Florida State beat top seed Florida 24-21. Longhorns fans will remind themselves of something else that happened that year. Although number 2 Florida State beat number 1 Florida, the Gators won the rematch in the Sugar Bowl to win the national championship.
