Agassi Loses at US Open and Retires
This year`s U.S. Open will not be remembered for the wins or losses, but for the fact that this tournament was Andre Agassi`s stage for his final farewell. The 36-year-old player have lost in the third round of the tournament, and followed by a tear-full goodbye ? retired from the game for good. "I was sitting there realizing that I was saying goodbye to everybody out there, and they were saying goodbye to me. It`s saying goodbye. It is a necessary evil. However, we were getting through it together. That felt amazing."
The crowd of 20,000 people gave Agassi a standing ovation for nearly 4 minutes, and said goodbye to one of the best tennis players the world has saw. Agassi started his career 21 years ago, and latterly grow in front of the audience. Getting better as the years went by. The eight-time champion has been suffering from a bad back and said that this U.S. Open will be his last appearance.
"The scoreboard said I lost today, but what the scoreboard doesn`t say is what it is I`ve found," Agassi told the crowd in a rare moment of bonding between a player and his supporters, his voice cracking with emotion. "Over the last 21 years, I`ve found loyalty. You have pulled for me on the court and also in life. I have found inspiration. You have willed me to succeed sometimes even in my lowest moments."
