Yankees still center of attention
This October, all eyes are on the New York Yankees. This in spite of the team`s early ousting from the playoffs, or perhaps because of it. First came reports that Manager Joe Torre would be fired, and then the news that he would stay for another year. Then came much talk about Alex Rodriguez`s future on the team. The most expensive player in baseball history came flat again this postseason, driving speculation he would find himself shipped to another team.
And now it`s time for more favorable news and developments to come from the Yankees. On Wednesday, Derek Jeter along with Ryan Howard received the Hank Aaron Award for his offensive production over the year. Jeter was asked a lot of questions about his baseball club. Jeter said he expects A-rod back next year. "Why? Why wouldn`t I expect him to be back?" he said.
Also returning next year will be Gary Sheffield. Reports have it that the Yankees told the player that they will pick up his $13 million option for next season. This follows Sheffield`s comments that he was hoping to test the free-agent market and get a long term, three year contract. He also does not want to play first base, and suspects the Yankees will trade him eventually.
