Roger Federer Wins Madrid Title
Swiss tennis player Roger Federer seems to be unstoppable. Ranked top player in the world, Federer added another feather to his cap this weekend when he grabbed the Madrid Masters Final title from Chilean Fernando Gonzalez. In a heart-stopping, fast-paced match, Federer and Gonzalez provided exciting entertainment for the crowd but it was Federer who showed greater talent and finally won the match 7-5, 6-1, 6-0. Federer entered the match with a 7-0 record against Gonzalez and his luck stayed with him right until a winning serve on his second match point.
Roger Federer dominated the match from the second set, gradually putting more and more pressure on the Chilean until the final set that proved to be a give-away. Federer?s lucky streak seems to be never-ending. The Madrid Masters title is his nineteenth straight victory. He has had 82 wins this year, a record number blemished by only 5 defeats. Federer is also the first player (in the Open era) to win 10 titles in three consecutive years.
Despite the disappointment of losing the match to Federer, Fernando Gonzalez can be proud of his achievements. He has shown great improvements in his game since he changed to his new coach, Larry Stefanki. He also proved his dedication to the game when he continued playing the match despite an arm injury that obviously set him back against Federer?s remarkable talent.
