Spot-less pitching from Rogers ties World Series
The Detroit Tigers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 to even the World Series at a game apiece. Detroit pitcher Kenny Rogers dominated the game, allowing two hits over eight innings of shutout ball. He also dominated the post-game talk, having pitched the first inning with a stain on his hand, either dirt or smudge, nobody really knows.
With the stain, and then without it, Rogers was untouchable. He has extended his post-season scoreless streak to 23 innings, a stretch that began in Game 3 against the Yankees, and is currently the third best in history. Rogers is also the second pitcher to have three scoreless starts in a single postseason.
The umpires brought Cardinals manager Tony La Russa onto the field to discuss his pitcher`s stained hand at the end of the first inning. Rogers then wiped his hands between innings, and continued playing for the rest of the game. "It was a big clump of dirt, and I wiped it off," Rogers said. "I didn`t know it was there, and they told me and I took it off, and it wasn`t a big deal." Game 3 will be played Tuesday in St. Louis.
