Mets beat Cards to tie series at 2-2
The St. Louis Cardinals held the New York Mets scoreless for 14 innings through the second inning of Game 4. That is surely a rare stretch, as the Mets have won 97 regular season games and the first playoff round behind their big bats. And so few were surprised by the end of the scoring drought, and the way it came about. The bottom line is a 12-5 Mets victory and a tied series at two games apiece. They broke a team record for most runs and homers in a postseason game on the way.
One night following a three hit shutout, the Mets connected on 14 hits. Carlos Delgado put New York ahead with a three-run homer, and added a two-run double. Carlos Beltran had two homers himself, and David Wright ended a personal 0-for-13 drought with a homer of his own. A three-one double from Jose Valentin in a six-run sixth pushed the Mets to a familiar position ? on top.
If rain does not postpone the game, the teams will meet on Monday night for another game in St. Louis. Tom Glavine (15-7) and Jeff Weaver (5-4) will repeat the Game 1 pitchers matchup, both on three days` rest. Delgado will have a chance to get a 10th RBI in the NLCS (he currently has nine), setting a new team record for most RBIs in a series. He has already set team records for extra-base hits, with six, of which four were home-runs.
