Walk-off homer sends tigers to World Series
The Detroit Tigers made it to the World Series, and they did it with a blast. It seems as if every night another player would step up and carry the team to a victory. This time it was Magglio Ordonez`s turn. He was quiet for the first three games of the American League Championship Series, with only two hits, both singles. Then came game 4.
Batting first for the Tigers in the sixth inning of Game 4 Ordonez homered off Oakland Athletics starter Dan Haren to tie the game 3-3. Then in the bottom of the ninth, the game still tied, two runners on base and two outs, Ordonez hit a three-run homer off closer Huston Street. The ball landed in the stands and the Tigers landed in their first World Series since Detroit won it all in 1984.
The Tigers are only three years removed from losing 119 games. This season they have come off 12 consecutive losing seasons. A four game sweep of the American League Championship Series was in no one`s mind until Ordonez made every one a believer. The Tigers will now await the winner of the National League Championship Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets. Detroit will play host to Game 1 of the World Series on Saturday.
