Torre stays with Yankees, Piniella goes elsewhere

Now that Lou Piniella is no longer in consideration to take over the manager job for the New York Yankees, as was rumored from the moment the Yankees were ousted by the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the playoffs, his agent said his whereabouts for next season could be decided as soon as Monday. Three teams are considering hiring the manager: Cubs, Giants, and Rangers.

Piniella said Tuesday that he is not interested in the managerial vacancy at the Washington Nationals. He prefers a young team that is planning for the future, he said. Piniella, 63, is reportedly looking for a four-year deal likely to average around $5 million per season. The two-time Manager of the Year is currently doing color commentary on the Fox telecasts of the American League Championship Series.

The Yankees have not publicly or officially announced Torre`s job to be vacant, but the New York media have reported the club may be seeking the services of Piniella. Pineilla is a considered close with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. He managed the club for three seasons in the late 1980s.
