Will Bonds be back?
Barry Bonds completed his 22nd season in the major leagues. The 42 year old, seven-time MVP has 734 home runs - 21 short of the all-time record held by Hank Aaron. Bonds who is entering free agency, batted .270 with 26 homers and 77 RBIs in 2006, after undergoing three knee operation in 2005. On Monday he had surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow, scouting in doubt his return for another season in the major leagues.
He is not expected to miss more than a month of training due to the operation, and according to his agent, Jeff Borris, he still hopes to begin discussions with the Giants soon about a new contract. Bonds does not sound convinced he will play again for the Giants, though. He is prepared to move to another team, if such a team will want him.
"I want to say thank you to the city of San Francisco for another great season!" he wrote on his site. "The Bay Area is my home and there are no better fans anywhere." The giants will demand Bonds take a pay cut to remain on the team, and no longer be the center piece as the current roster failed to make the playoffs. However, he did seem more comfortable after passing Babe Ruth`s home run total in May, with the national media attention with the questions about his alleged steroid use diminishing.
