Shaq slams new ball
The NBA decided this summer to change the basketballs that are used to play with around the league. It is only the first time in 35 years it has done so, and the second in the league`s 60 year history. The new Spalding model "is a microfiber composite with moisture management that provides superior grip and feel throughout the course of a game," according to league officials.
But some players, and Miami Heat center Shaquille O`Neal the most vocal in the group, oppose the change. "It`s the worst decision some expert, whoever did it, made," said the Big Fella. "The NBA`s been around how long? A hundred years? Fifty years? So to change it now, whoever that person is needs his college degree revoked. It`s a terrible decision." The players expect shooting percentages to be down and turnovers to be up because of the new ball.
There is no doubt that some adjustment will be necessary by the players, some of whom played in International competition over the summer, where a third, different kind of ball is used. NBA executive Stu Jackson said Tuesday that he still believes it is a better ball. "Statistically, we shot the ball better from two, from three and the free throw line, and turnovers were even," Jackson said.
