Cyclist Legend, Lance Armstrong, Plans his Running Debut

He has not raced since winning the Tour de France in July 2005, but that doesn?t mean that cycling legend, Lance Armstrong didn?t miss the buzz and excitement of competing. This may be why the seven-times Tour de France winner is planning a comeback to the world of athletics by taking part in the New York Running Marathon this year. An excited Armstrong told reporters that he has been running every single day since he stopped cycling professionally.

Armstrong became a household name as an example of someone who fought back from a terrible disease and went on to achieve the seemingly impossible. In 1996, Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer and doctors didn?t give him much time to live. Against all odds, Armstrong not only got well, but he went on to win the greatest cycling marathon on earth, the Tour de France an incredible seven times. Armstrong is the symbol of hope for millions of cancer sufferers and spends all his free time raising money and awareness for cancer research.

Armstrong admits that he was not a born runner and that he was ?born to do other things?. However, he runs every day in Central Park and is sure that he will be able to withstand the pain associated with running long distance. Armstrong is eyeing a three-hour or less time in the marathon, perhaps taking queues from former Tour de France cyclist, Laurent Jalabert who ran the New York Marathon in 2:55.39 hours last year.
