Seattle Sonics celebrate 40th anniversary team
The Seattle Supersonics got their first win of the season by beating the Los Angeles Lakers 117-101 on Sunday night. Ray Allan scored 32 points, connecting on 10 of his 16 shots. Kobe Bryant, still recovering from his knee operation in the summer, had 15 points to lead his team, along with nine assists.
Seattle had another cause for celebration Sunday, other than avoiding a 0-3 start for the first time since 1985. The team celebrated 40 years in Seattle, announcing the 40th anniversary team roster, as selected by fans. The members of the 40th anniversary team are Fred Brown, Lenny Wilkens, Spencer Haywood, Slick Watts, Jack Sikma, Detlef Schrempf, Xavier McDaniel, Sam Perkins, Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis, Dennis Johnson, Gary Payton, Nate McMillan, Dale Ellis and Gus Williams.
Six-time All Star forward Shawn Kemp was also selected. Kemp played in Seattle from 1989-1997, in which he averaged 16.2 points and 9.5 rebounds and was noted for his powerful dunks. His NBA career ended in 2003 after 14 years. But he plans on heading to Italy to play for a team in Rome, and even has not ruled out a return to the league. "Don`t be surprised if you see me sneak in here and play this season," he said.
