Juventus Secures Their 29th Serie A Title
After an uneasy week, Juventus beat Reggina Calcio, proved AC Milan`s 2-1 battle against AS Roma to be in vain, and secured their 29th Serie A title. Trezeguet broke the deadlock midway through the first half, tapping in from close range after Ivan Pelizzoli could only parry Fabio Cannavaro`s back-heel into the lurking French international?s path. Needing just a point to defend their title, the goal sparked huge celebrations among the Bianconeri squad, and substitute Del Piero sealed the win in the final minute.
The celebrations where clouded by off-the-field problems the team is experiencing. Moggi said he was resigning from his post so that he could defend himself from accusations at the heart of a scandal, which has rocked the country. "From tomorrow I will have resigned as general manager of Juventus, from this evening the world of football is no longer my world," said an emotional Moggi. "Now I will think only about defending myself from all the malice that been said about me."
Juve`s victory made the game between Milan and Roma at San Siro largely inconsequential, even though the Rossoneri had kept their hopes alive with a hard-fought triumph. Carlo Ancelotti`s side enjoyed a dream start when Kak? converted a fifth-minute penalty but their hopes looked to be fading as Philippe Mexes leveled just after the half-hour. That is how the scores remained until added time when Cesare Bovo hauled down Alberto Gilardino. Marcio Amoroso converted a penalty, which proved to no avail as Juve held their nerve.
