McClaren Succeeds Eriksson
Steve McClaren will takeover Sven-Goran Eriksson as England manager after the FIFA World Cup finals in Germany, as announced this week by The Football Association. McClaren guided Middlesbrough FC to the UEFA Cup final against Sevilla FC and is considered one of the best managers in Britain. McClaren agreed for a four-year contract having worked as part of Eriksson`s coaching staff since the summer of 2004.
The 45-year-old, who served as England`s caretaker coach for one game prior to Eriksson taking charge, was also involved in the build-up to the World Cup in Korea/Japan four years ago but stepped down after the tournament to concentrate on club duties. He returned to Eriksson`s side ahead of UEFA EURO 2004? and has remained in the role ever since.
"This is the biggest honor any coach can have, and is obviously the highlight of my career," said McClaren. "It`s a massive challenge and one that I welcome. I have hugely enjoyed my time at Middlesbrough and am very grateful to the club. However, this was an opportunity I couldn`t refuse. My immediate priority is next week`s UEFA Cup final with Middlesbrough and then working with Sven and his coaching team to achieve success in Germany this summer, before I turn my thoughts to the UEFA EURO 2008? qualifying campaign."
