New Book to Help Coaches with Communication

One of the few sports communication specialists in the world, Serena Greenslade has released his new book titled "How to get even better results from your athletes - what most coaching manuals don`t tell you." Greenslade`s latest book doesn`t try to show sports coaches what to teach their athletes, she assumes they are experts in their chosen field. Instead she shows sports coaches how to deliver the expertise they already have so that their athletes can hear it. "They might have the best ideas and drills in the area but if their athletes can`t hear or understand them, it`s a waste of a good coach," says Serena.

The book shows the coach how to deliver the instructions. What is it, exactly, that most teaching manuals don`t tell you? According to the book`s author, it is simply the ability to be able to communicate well. "Coaches must be able to not only able to speak clearly but know when to stop and listen as well," says Serena. "It`s possible to get two sports coaches with the same qualifications, approximately the same age and same ability but one is twice as busy as the other," says Serena. Following a number of years of research which involved observing hundreds of hours of sports coaching, Serena concluded that it had nothing to do with their sports skills ? it was because of their communication skills.

Those coaches with the busiest classes and longest lists were the coaches who were able to talk to their athletes. They could chat with the children, their parents, adult learners and managers without wasting valuable coaching time. These coaches could explain techniques more easily, they could be heard more easily and just as importantly they listened and remembered what they?d been told. "An important part of any coaches job is to sound enthusiastic all the time," says Greenslade, "and this book shows coaches how". The book is perfect for any trainee sports coach or physical education teacher who has a passion for their sport but who, until now has neglected to work on their vocal skills.
