FIFA President Addresses Soccer Cheating in Munich
The world`s soccer governing body is often regarded as a god with not teeth, but following last week`s FIFA Congress in Munich it seems that things might change soon. Sepp Blatter, FIFA`s president, said during the soccer conference that he believes a truly independent ethics committee will make a better job than the existing one run in house. There`s a growing need to control match-fixing and other major cheating activities in soccer, and FIFA plans to address the issue seriously.
Although a new independent committee was discussed, the names of the people who will man the positions are yet to be decided. Another major issue that wasn`t agreed upon is the committee`s responsibilities and power. FIFA plans to take action regarding the matter very soon and FIFA Congress isn`t the last occasion for this kind of discussion.
Blatter said the subject is of top priority after a series of scandal regarding soccer cheating, with the Italian team Juventus being at the heart of a match-fixing furore, has occurred. The Juventus scandal caused Italian referee Massimo De Santis to withdraw from the World Cup after implications were made.
