World Champion Lippi Resigns
We`ve just heard about Klinsmann leaving Germany, and now we are informed of another coach who will be stepping down ? surprisingly enough, it`s the coach of the new world champion, Italy. Marcello Lippi resigned no Wednesday, only three days after taking Italy all the way to win World Cup 2006.
"At the end of an extraordinary professional and human experience, experienced as the head of an exceptional group of players ... I believe my role is over as the guide of the Italian national team," Lippi said in a statement. Although there were many calls for Lippi to stay in office, the winning coach decided that it is time to leave the national team. The Italian soccer world is currently dealing with one of its biggest scandals and Lippi feels that him and his son were treated unfairly in that matter.
"I will continue to coach," Lippi said without elaborating. The head of Italy`s Soccer Federation, Guido Rossi, said that Lippi has informed him previously during World Cup that he plans to resign for six months regardless of his team`s performance. "I hope that after the six months he will take on a new role," Rossi added.
