Podolski Named Young Player of World Cup

Germany`s Lukas Podolski was chosen as the tournament`s best young player, overcoming Portugal`s Cristiano Ronaldo that was overlooked because of his antics against England and France. FIFA officials criticized Ronald for his behavior surrounding Wayne Rooney`s red card.

Ronaldo winked at his bench and FIFA did not like that. Ronald also blatantly dived in the penalty box during Portugal`s semi-final match against France. Podolski scored three goals during the tournament and was named as World Cup 2006`s young player of the tournament.

"I would have liked to have taken home another trophy - the World Cup - but it is a great honor for me to get this award and will provide me with great motivation to go on and become more successful," Podolski said after hearing the news of his win. Other young players that were nominated for the award were Ecuador`s Luis Valencia, Argentina`s Lionel Messi, Spain`s Cesc Fabregas and Tranquillo Barnetta from Switzerland.
