Glance into the Future
Based on the fact that they kicked San Antonio?s ass the two times that they have met this season, it?s pretty obvious that the Pistons wouldn?t mind running into the Spurs in the finals. There is nothing better for an opposing team to have than a mental advantage. Sometimes, it?s even better than having home court advantage.
Another Pistons series in June would be the ultimate test for the Spurs? renowned ?chameleon? ability, the ability to play any style and win with it. Perception is important, and maybe we perceive the Spurs as a team without enough offensive talent to isolate Detroit?s great defenders and beat them.
That perception could be wrong. Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Nick Van Exel all can break down good defenders and score. But NBA history shows that teams that isolate well don?t win a deep playoff series, they win maybe a game or two in a deep playoff series.
Pistons are a bunch of B-level stars that fit together well. Ben and Rasheed Wallace locker side-by-side, and beside Sheed is Tayshaun Prince. That 21 feet sitting together has chemistry. Sheed is funny, Ben has the dry humor, younger Prince is quiet and low-key. To attack that 21 feet, the irony is that you must punch it inside.
