Importance of Communication in Coaching

Proper communication skills are a necessity not just in the corporate world but also in sports. Coaching is all about communications. As a coach you need to communicate to your players what it is that you want them to accomplish on the basketball court, football field, etc. This holds true not just for coaches who are coaching in the professional, but also those who work in the education system.

A recent study on the subject has revealed that coaches with the busiest classes and longest lists were the coaches who were able to talk to their athletes. They could chat with the children, their parents, adult learner and managers without wasting valuable coaching time. These coaches could explain techniques more easily, they could be heard more easily and just as importantly they listened and remembered what they?d been told.

Serena Greenslade who conducted the study had this to say, ?I?m astonished by the little importance most coaching courses put on communication skills. They put aside a very small amount of time to cover this topic, if any at all and if it is included in the course it?s taught by someone who knows very little about effective communication?.
