Nate Goes Retro
All those who figured that the success of last year?s slam dunk contest was nothing more than a fluke got another thing coming yesterday. Not since the days of Spudd Web has anyone this small been able to win the competition. In fact, Web won the competition exactly 20 years ago, which is kind of symbolic considering the part he took in yesterday?s competition.
Webb helped give Robinson that inspiration when he was younger. Robinson knows he`s here because Webb was here first. Last year`s winner Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks donned a retro Dominique Wilkins jersey which helped solidify his win that night. Nate tapped the same NBA family tree in Houston. Before what will be easily his most talked about dunk of the night, Nate pulled out a throwback Spudd Webb jersey, handed it to the fellow small man and Slam Dunk legend, and the rest as they say, is history.
Hopefully this will put to bed the rumors and concerns that today`s NBA players don`t remember the players that paved the way. This is not the case for Nate Robinson. He hears often the comparrisons to Webb. Always has. Nate doesn`t mind though.
