Knight ties record for most career wins

When the game ended and Texas Tech defeated Bucknell 72-60, it was more than just another victory for coach Bob Knight. Knight tied Dean Smith`s record with 879 wins in Division I men`s basketball games. "I`m pleased that we`re both right where we are," Knight said. He will have a chance to take the top spot with win number 880 when his team hosts UNLV on Thursday.

Knight, in his 41st year coaching, has a record of 879-353 and has won three NCAA championships. He has coached Indiana for 29 years, and has been coaching in Lubbock since 2001. Knight prefers to downplay the achievement. No announcement came after the victory in the arena, a game played by a season-high 11,561 fans. "I`d like to have hit 62 home runs. Then I think I would`ve accomplished something," Knight said.

The two all-time leading coaches, who are different in style but are friends, spoke a few days ago. Knight quoted all-time great Michael Jordan, who has played for both coaches, who said "that both Dean and I have always tried to reach the same end, and that we have different ways of doing it. Coach Smith is the master of the four-corner offense and coach Knight is master of the four-letter word. That`s a verbatim quote from Jordan," Knight said.
