Top Tennis Player, Lindsay Davenport, to Retire for Motherhood

One of the world?s top tennis players, Lindsay Davenport, will probably announce her retirement from the world of sports as she is due to give birth to her first child next summer. Davenport was ranked number one in the world for four years and celebrated a glittering career on the courts. In recent years, however, she has slipped to 25th place and rumors have been circulating for a while now that the tennis player is ready to start a new phase in her life. Due to an injury, she has only managed to play eight tournaments this year, none in the past four months.

Lindsay Davenport won a gold medal in the 1996 Olympics with the United States team. In 1998, she won the US Open and beat Steffi Graf in Wimbledon in 1999. The 30 year-old was ranked number one in the world in 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2005. All in all, she has won over 50 singles titles and is definitely considered one of the best female tennis players in history.

In 2004, Davenport announced her retirement but went back on her decision and kept on playing. Her marriage to investment banker, Jonathan Leach and her subsequent pregnancy fueled speculation that the American was ready to finally put down the rackets. ?I hate the word `retirement` but this season was such a struggle physically for me and I can`t imagine playing again," Davenport told the press.
