OSU`s Smith wins Heisman

Ohio State University`s quarterback Troy Smith is the No. 1 college football player, winning the 2006 Heisman Trophy. Smith received 801 first-place votes and won by 1,662 points, making him the second biggest winner in Award`s 71-year history. Only O.J. Simpson in 1968 won by a greater margin.

The 22 year-old senior received this honor only two years after nearly ending his career, when he took money from a booster. Two years later he would throw four touchdown passes against Michigan and establish his place amongst the best. He became the first Ohio State quarterback in 70 years to beat Michigan three times. Smith had 1,051 total yards in those victories. Smith and his team will face Florida for the national championship on January 8. It will be his chance to improve his amazing 11-1 record as a starter against ranked opponents.

Second to smith came Arkansas running back Darren McFadden. Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn and West Virginia running back Steve Slaton were third and fourth, respectively. At the ceremony, receiving the Award, Smith said "Normally, I`m pretty cool in pressure situations, but my heart is pounding so fast now."
