Chris Carpenter to Stay in St. Louis
The St. Louis Cardinals signed a 5-year deal with 2005 Chris Carpenter, a National League Cy Young Award winner, locking him up through the 2011 season for approximately $65 million, the team told the press on Monday. The deal allows the club to prolong the deal to 2012 if that happens the total value of the deal would rise to $77 million. Walt Jocketty, the tems General Manager, said: "It was important for us to show what we think of him." Carpenter stats were 15-8 with a 3.09 earned-run average last season. He finishing third in the Cy Young balloting. Not to mention helping the Cardinals win their first World Series title in 24 years. St. Louis reached the playoffs in every one of the three years he played there, reaching the World Series twice. Carpenter was signed for $7 million in 2007 with a $9-million option for 2008.
Pitcher Vicente Padilla and the Texas Rangers agreed to signed a 3-year contract for $33.75-million, as long as, he passes his physical examination, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations who wishes to remain anonymous because an announcement had not been made.
The San Francisco Giants closed a 2-year contract with first baseman Rich Aurilia for $8 million and a 1 year contract with third baseman Pedro Feliz for $5.1 million. Brian Sabean, the teams General Manager, said that the Giants are in negotiations with outfielder Barry Bonds` agent at the winter meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
