Reggina Punished for Match Fixing Scandal Involvement
The match-fixing fiasco that troubled Italy`s soccer world will take long to be forgotten. The latest ruling by a sports tribunal took place this week with Reggina dodging a Serie A demotion, but getting a 15-point penalty instead. On the same ruling, the tribunal punished Serie B team Arezzon with nine penalty points.
In previous decisions, some of the best teams in Europe, such as Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio, were transferred to Serie B as a punishment for their involvement in the match-fixing scandal. Fiorentina and Lazio were able to appeal and overturn the verdict, but Juventus will open for Serie B starting next season.
The Italian soccer season has been delayed for two weeks as a result of the scandal and will open on September 9-10. The aftershocks of these penalties will be felt throughout the season and there are more developments coming. Many international players have changed teams due to the scandal and the new teams` standings, and there is no end in sight.
