President of Real Madrid Resigns

Real Madrid CF president, Fernando Martin, has resigned from his duties after serving only 58 days as the team`s president. Martin has lost a recent vote of confidence at the team`s board meeting and as a result handed his resignation. The Spanish football club will hold elections soon to find a long-term substitute for their resigning president.

"The board has voted unanimously to call for a presidential election," club representative Enrique S?nchez told a news conference. "They have accepted the resignation of Mart?n so that he can stand in those elections." The team is not in good shape this season and the new president will have to face many critics.

Mart?n succeeded Florentino P?rez as president on 27 February but has faced mounting pressure to call a presidential election from inside and outside the club in recent weeks, although Real Madrid statutes gave him a mandate until 2008. The team is third in the Primera Divisi?n and will end the campaign without a trophy for the third successive season, their worst run in more than 50 years.
